Computer Science Schools

Hey,

So I'm narrowing down my list as much as possible. I live in NYC, so I was looking at Fordham, NYU, Manhattan, Villanova. I wanted to go to a large liberal arts college and have the "traditional college experience." Then, towards the end of Junior year, I realized that these schools aren't strong in Comp Sci, and they're all expensive.

So I started looking at tech schools and SUNY's. I'm gonna apply to:
- RPI
- WPI
- Fordham (fee waived)
- Manhattan (fee waived)
- Binghamton
- Stony Brook

My top choice is Binghamton. For one, it's affordable. At three hours away, it's also not too far and not too close to home. (Fordham and Manhattan would be too close). I know Binghamton is not known for Comp Sci, but, from what I've heard, Stony Brook students are generally unhappy.

RPI and WPI would be my second choices. The problem is money, but I'll apply anyways and see what happens.

I was wondering if I missed anything and if I have a chance at all these schools.

About being Brazilian, speaking Portuguese and Spanish, and loving computers. At first I didn't like it, but everyone says it's really good. My Writing Sem teacher said it's "Outstanding" (lol)

Sorry to bore you to death, and thanks for helping!

PS: I'm looking for something in the northeast.

I forgot some stuff:

GPA: 3.8 (unweighted)

SAT: 640R, 610M, 700W

School doesn’t rank…

Son is at Buffalo for engineering. Comp sci was his back up major on his apps.
though he did not pick the school by cost, he was happy to get $3000/year merit money from UB and his grades are similar to yours. (31 ACT)

UB has a better engineering program than Binghamton (where he was also accepted and loved the school) so I would think they also have a better comp sci dept. They are building a new Comp Sci/Engineering building.

Town wise there is much more locally in Buffalo than in Binghamton.

My son is very, very happy there.

WPI and RPI are great schools. We ruled it out due to male/female ration and socializing (or lack thereof) though everyone I know at both those schools has loved them and done well.

Son got into Delaware, RIT, Syracuse, VaTech also if that helps you at all. (Can’t remember all the others though if you PM me I can give you the full list and merit amounts at each.)

Thanks!

Buffalo is too far away for me. I’d like to stay within 3 hours or so. I’ll take a look at the other schools.

I agree with the WPI and RPI thing, but I don’t think it’d stop me from going.

Anyone have other ideas?

Maybe Holy Cross, Northeastern?

Rose Hulman immediately comes to mind. But, you want to be close to home. Anyway, check it out!!!

Thanks,

Do I have a good shot at the schools on my list?

Holy Cross has a top notch computer science and math dept

how about NYU-POly in brooklyn?

I heard that its computer engineering program is good.

hey,

NYU’s compsci program was moved to Brooklyn (“NYU-Poly”). but it doesn’t sound like what you’re looking for. it sounds like you DON’T want New York City. yes it’s CS program is good and it offers good job placement after graduation and if you get into Honors it’s super cheap, but you sound like you want to get away from home. So go for Binghamton. Or maybe an even higher-ranked school. Your grades are awesome. I don’t know what your SAT scores are like though.

Hmm. Maybe try and find a liberal arts school that offers a lot of FA/merit aid. There’s a couple lists on CC.

Wait, someone said you want to be close to home. Close, but not TOO close, right? I honestly think you need a change from the city. Maybe a little bit more suburbia is what your college experience needs. :s

That’s exactly what I want! lol

Do I stand a chance in all my schools?

oh hell yes. RPI may be a slight reach but not really. ultimately, I say you’re solid :)

CMU (more than 3 hours away but one of the very best CS program)
UMD, SUNY Stony Brook, UMass Amherst, Penn State, Rutgers

Also most Ivies near NY have great CS program (Columbia, Cornell, Princeton, Brown, Yale). They are very hard to get in but they do give the most aid and could be the least expensive if you get lucky. Get your math SAT up and you might have a chance.
