Hey, I hope you’re all well!
I was wondering if there are any computer science majors transferring to UC’s for the fall of 2016. If so, what schools are you applying to? Also feel free to lend me or any other member some advice (wink).
I will be applying to:
Berkeley ― Computer Science (BA)
San Diego ― Mathematics, Computer Science (BS)
Los Angeles ― Mathematics of Computation (BS)
Irvine ― Computer Science (BS)
Davis ― Computer Science (BS)
For transferring, is the transferable grade point average the one with the upmost importance or do the admission officers look at the overall grade point average?
What grade point average or extracurriculars does Berkeley look for? How are you guys doing in terms of GPA?
I intend to brainstorm and start my personal statements this weekend. What are you guys planning to talk about? I was thinking about taking the importance of computer science in modern day to describe the drive I have to change the world at my fingertips (this is just a random thought).
It’s also rather difficult to land a software engineering internship as a first year community college student (well at least if you don’t live in northern California). With no significant projects under my belt it was no cigar. I think at a community college, the computer science community seems rather nonexistent. I mean I would like to start outside projects with colleagues or professors.
What do you guys think?
Yup, the GPA for all transferable courses is the most important one. Along with the major GPA they are the primary items the UC’s look at. Courses that don’t transfer are ignored and unimportant. That is of course unless you have a huge number of F’s there but unless some extreme exists you should be fine.
Berkeley doesn’t release GPA averages for transfers in CS but UCLA does. Last year it was a 3.88 average and supposedly to learn Berkeley’s GPA average just add a point to a couple of points to the UCLA one to get the Berkeley one.
If you can show initiative by taking the limited resources available to you to create some project then the UC’s will take that into account.
Good luck!
Berkeley ― Computer Science (BA)
Davis ― Computer Science (BS)
Irvine ― Computer Science (BS)
Salute to everyone studying CS and I hope we all end up in great places as we advance through education/work.
@napapapa
Are you not applying to LA and SD because of the huge amount of pre-req’s they require?
@Orangered123 Yeah and apart from Irvine I’d like to stay around the Bay Area.
@napapapa
That’s cool. Any reason you’d want to go to Irvine? Are applying for TAG to either Irvine or Davis?
@Orangered123 I’ve been set on tagging to Davis; I really like the breadth of Irvine’s School of Information & CS most of all really. What UCs are you interested in?
Also @ everyone do you plan on doing any projects sometime soon to showcase for your application? I know a bit of C++ & Python, I want to study up on web development and make a website going into more detail of me, my interests, and other compsci related things.
Irvine CS also has a large number of prerequisites that are hard to find at community colleges other than Orange Coast College.
