I plan on majoring in Computer Science at either the University of Florida or the University of Central Florida.

I know that UCF is very strong in Comp. Sci. but I do not know much about UF. I have been accepted to both and I am trying to make a final decision.

Do you know about Computer Science at either of these schools?

I agree with striver in that UF has a better reputation in almost any major over UCF, and I can't really imagine one school being significantly better than the other in a CompSci program, although I could be completely wrong as I am basing this without doing any research.

jess,
I think you've got it backwards. UF is somebody in computer science; UCF is not as well known. Everything else being equal, you want to go to UF.

Nefer, I think you have it backwards.UCF actually has more patents than UF does.UCF was ranked in the top 10 in patents passing Harvard. You can check for yourself.

I don't think it matters my friend. Are you planning on going to grad/professional school? The "higher ranked" school will aid you in that process.

However, if right now your task is to be trained for a job after graduation, go to the one that you find more appealing. Maybe it's the atmosphere, the buildings on campus, the closeness to home, etc.

In the end, you want to make sure you keep a decent GPA, and more importantly, get some work experience while in school!

Work experience > school ranking (!= for grad school)

Cool. That's pretty impressive. If UCF can sustain that kind of success, it will be good for the students and the State of Florida. However, the patent count doesn't say anything about its computer science department. If you read the fine print, it says almost all of the patents in this scorecard come from different areas.

I am not dissing UCF, BTW. It's a terrific school. Just saying that when it comes to computer science, UF has an edge.

I would go to UF over UCF in a heartbeat. It doesn't matter if UCF is as good or even better, what matters is its reputation is significantly higher. I think it'll make it easier to find work, especially out of state. I'm not trying to knock UCF, I'm sure it is a good school. However, for everyone who doesn't live in Florida, UF is considered the best school in the state. Here, if an employer was handed two identical resumes with the only difference being one says UF and the other said UCF, the UF applicant would get picked. If you apply to grad school, having UF on your application will probably help you more than if it said UCF.
