Computer Science Undergraduate Universities

Which ones among these Universities I got accepted into will be the best for Undergraduate in Computer Science?
1)University of Wisconsin, Madison
2)Northeastern University
3)University of Massachusetts, Amherst
4)State University of New York at Stony Brook
5)State University of New York at Buffalo
6)Fordham University
7)Purdue University

There isn’t much to distinguish undergraduate CS programs. Any of the above schools should be fine. Go with the one you think you’ll be most comfortable at, or the one that offers a particular concentration that you’re interested in. It also wouldn’t be worth paying extra in out-of-state tuition if any of those listed are in-state public schools for you.

I can only comment on the New York schools. Stony Brook has a strong reputation for Computer Science. I don’t think Fordham does.

Fordham is a great school, though. The core curriculum is serious. I think it’s something close to 20 courses, but it’s been a while since I’ve looked. Maybe it’s 15. I just remember thinking that it would be tough to do a double major there.

Stony Brook is ABET accredited in CS, Fordham is not. But you might get a better undergraduate education at Fordham. Not trying to confuse you, I just don’t know too much about Fordham’s CS department. You might get more individual attention there. That could be worth more than the better reputation that Stony Brook has. I wouldn’t base my decision on ABET accreditation, though. There are lots of ABET accredited CS departments that pay zero attention to their undergraduates.

They’re very different places, though. Fordham is urban, and very close to Manhattan. Stony Brook is suburban, and not close to Manhattan at all - 2 hours by train.

If you’re choosing based on reputation, I would choose Stony Brook over Buffalo. Also, Buffalo is freezing cold and snowy.

I don’t know how strong UMass Amherst’s CS reputation is, but the idea of having access to the other schools in that consortium is interesting. I’m not sure how realistic taking courses at the other schools is, but I had a coworker who said she took a lot of courses at Amherst College while enrolled at UMass Amherst. Her credibility was questionable though, so do your own research on that point.

Sorry, but I have no information whatsoever about the other schools. Good luck.

UW-Madison, Northeastern, UMass Amherst, and Stony Brook probably have the best CS reputations, but all of them will do well. If you have to choose between those 4, focus on fit - they all have pretty different environments.
