Computer Science @ UW

I've heard that UW is known for their top computer science program. I'm interested in majoring in the field. Would current students please tell me more about the major at UW? How many are majoring? Is it competitive?

Thanks for your responses!

I'm a TA for the department, so I have a little insight. It is possibly the most competitive major in the school. I know people that have applied their junior year with a 3.5 cumulative GPA and still get rejected.

@tasteomycheese: that's reassuring... lol

Bear with me re: the possibility that this info is outdated. S applied for and went thru UW CS program four years ago. He decided very late ( middle of Jr. year) that he wanted CS. In fact, at the time, he was very close to completing some type of business degree. (Still can't believe he was allowed to do this...not sure I ever got the whole story.) Think he was carrying about a 3.7 at the time. Not a big EC kinda guy, though he was pres. of his frat. Rejected. I think he said it was like a 20-25% acceptance rate?? Got an internship and a part time job at UW. Applied again. Rejected again. Meanwhile, carrying maybe a 3.8?..and in "senior" year. Applied a third time (upper division admission allows application only every 6 mo.--at least that's the way it was then) and told himself it would be the LAST time. Accepted! He figured they just wanted to make sure he was serious about it-haha. So...he was on the five + year plan. But it was worth it. Incredible and intense major. I remember him telling me that he would head to the CS computer lab about 2 a.m. to get work done, and all 25 computers would be in use...ouch. But--great profs and research opportunties. Job offers everywhere afterwards.
Competitive?-yes. Worth it?--without question.
S now supports UW CS as a young alum. He remains very grateful for what it gave him.

Thanks for the insight!

My son was admitted to CSE directly out of a non-competitive in-state High School. Unweighted HS GPA 3.98, had 69 credits of AP coming in to the UW and a 2320 on his SAT. I know that one of his friends also got admitted but didn't have the same sort of GPA, AP credits or SAT scores. I can't tell you what they were, but I know they were not as good.

Is computer graphics major offered here?

Not sure about undegrads, but I know that their grad graphics program at cs is one of the best.

What is CS?
