I know that these are the two majors that I am most interested in, but I don’t have the slightest idea which I am more interested in. Cal Poly SLO and UCB are choices as of now, and I know I probably will not be able to switch between the two majors at these universities. I know this is a difficult question to answer, so I would appreciate any sources of in depth information about these two majors or any information at all. Thanks in advance
These two majors are rather different from one another, if I were you I would start asking myself what attracts me to each. If you don’t know yet (which is totally fine and expected) go to a place where you have more options. It would be quite a problem to go to a school where you discover you don’t like engineering but there are few good alternate options for you. I hope you don’t want these majors just because they are cool and competitive. You will be a lot more successful in engineering if your heart is genuinely into it. If it’s not you’ll be either miserable or you’ll have to switch your career anyway.
Switching out of CS and into any other major is probably very easy at any school. Maybe less so from Aero to CS, but otherwise switching from Aero into anything should also be easy. CS is not a guarantee at any school, considering how competitive it is, especially at UCB where they have “holistic admissions” whatever that means. So make sure you have more options.Good luck!
At most colleges switching into either of these majors will be difficult. So you really should try to figure out before you apply which is more interesting to you. Do you want to spend your days thinking of fluid flow, wing loading, vibrations, material properties, costs, possibly government contracting, probably large project teams? Do you like possibly working on military contracts? Do you want to live where aircraft manufacturers have their design studios? Or do you want to spend your days hacking around in code?
You’d be better served in your quest by ansking specific questions. As it stands, your question is overly broad. The two fields are very different and we have no clue what attracted you to both or what you really want to know.
I will give you a bit of advice. No matter how strong your stats are, have a safety school. Both majors at both schools you mentioned are tough admits.
You should also look into the schools themselves. The undergrad experience at Cal Poly and UCB is VERY different.
Good luck!
