I am primarily interested in Computer Science, but was hoping to hold some knowledge in the EE side of computers. So I chose the CE major at UCSD because it looked like it would fulfill that (most of the same courses w/ some hardware tacked on). I didn't think about it that much because I wasn't really planning on going, but did I make the right choice? If not, can I change it?

Computer Engineering is 75% hardware related and 25% software related
Computer Science is 75% software related and 25% hardware related
it depends on what interest you more …

Yup, you can change your major easily since CS and CE are no longer impacted. I am not sure about CE but CSE is pretty fun at UCSD. Professor like Katsner and Ord really made those courses enjoyable for you :)

It depends on just how much EE you want. I think if you only want a intro it’s better to just do CS and then take whatever EE classes interest you. They changed the requirements for CE as well so you don’t take some of the awesome classes like Compilers for a requirement(you can still take it for a technical elective though). If you just want to know a little about circuit design I suggest just going CS and taking EE classes.

Btw, CS is also requires alot less classes than CE, so if graduating early is something you want to do, then CS would be better.

Thanks for the explanation. My son has been accepted into CE but I think he is more interested in programming. I guess he should consider switching to CS.
BTW, is it easy to change major from CE/CS to Visual Arts, or double major? He will be in Revelle.

What I’m really interested in is which one is more likely to get you a job after college… but that’s a discussion for a different thread.

What’s the difference between getting a BA and a BS in CompSci?

@ Stonebridge

It super easy to switch majors. Just go to triton link and change it. However you can’t just easily switch TO impacted majors like mechanical engineering, and bioengineering. But as for other majors you can switch automatically.

Engineers can double major HOWEVER, they CAN NOT double major with 2 engineering majors (ie.
Major: Electrical, Major: Structural). But you CAN double major with an engineering and a non engineering type (ie. Major: Electrical, Major: Visual Arts)

BA’s are the practically the same as BS for CS degrees. I mean they take 95% of the same classes. Source: http://www.ucsd.edu/catalog/curric/CSE-ug.html

And when it comes down to it, whether BA/BS degree or even EE/CE/CS degree, interviewers pretty much view it all the same. They usually focus on what side projects you worked on (either for internship or personal project), and less so on the course work you’ve taken.

@happybarco: Overall, BA takes less classes than BS. Whether to do it or not depends on whether you’re the type that focuses more on academics or the type that always has things going on on the side. As samdaloser24 said, employers care about work experience pretty much. There are a lot of project-based classes, but there’s nothing to stop you from writing code on your own free time. If you go to the job fairs, they usually ask you technical questions, and if they don’t they do at interviews. Being able to answer these questions depends on whether you’ve taken coursework that’s covered it, or whether you’ve studied it on your own. If you’re good at self-teaching and independent work, it might be better to go for the BA and use that time to work on your projects. I’m assuming you’re a freshman, so you have a year or two while you’re here to figure out which type you are before you have to decide further coursework.

@samdaloser24, thank you very much! This is very helpful.

One more question: what if he wants to switch from CE to Visual Arts? Is that also easy to do?

@ stonebridge
It’s very easy to change majors. Since Visarts is NOT impacted (unlike mechanical and bioengineering), just click Major and Minor link on triton link and just change it.

@Leakers

CS is almost 100% software/math related.

CpE is as much software/hardware related as the school you go to or the classes you take.

Would it hurt your chances of getting a job in which most applicants are CS majors, if you are a CE major?

@chaos0awaits: If you know your stuff as well as a CS major, it doesn’t really matter.
