Computer Science vs Computer Engineering Rankings. How do They Compare?

Out of the different university rankings that I have looked at, I have basically only found a ranking for computer science for most universities, even if they offer a computer engineering program. Therefore, I was just wondering how the two would compare- can someone consider them as around the same? Will most companies that want a computer science grad also hire a grad with a computer engineering degree?

Computer engineering involves hardware (and sometimes software), whereas computer science is usually more software oriented, so it would depend on the hiring company’s needs and focus.

@vonlost If a university has a high ranking in computer science, is it safe to assume that their computer engineering program is also quite good even if there is not a ranking for it?

That seems like a reasonable assumption.

Computer engineering tends to get lumped in with Electrical engineering so I would take those into account as well. Or look at their graduate school rankings and make assumptions off that. http://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/82410-full-us-news-rankings-for-engineering-specialities/
In general, yes a computer engineering degree will qualify you for the same software engineering job that a computer science degree would. The only difference is that the CS graduate has taken more CS classes than a computer engineering graduate would have.

There’s probably a lot of overlap, but don’t concentrate overmuch on individual major rankings - especially since undergraduate departments are usually not ranked.

Some schools with good or decent CS on the software side do not have much in the way of hardware or EE side (that would ordinarily be considered a significant part of “computer engineering”).
