I’m deciding on what to apply for as it seems like a big risk up front. I recently contacted the UIUC admissions counselor and asked about a second major option, and while they allow it, it is not allowed for CS and CE because of its competitiveness. What I’m wondering is if generally CS is significantly more competitive than CE.
These are two different fields. Don’t worry about what is more competitive. Which one do you want to pursue?
I’m more interested in theory so CS, but I’d rather not blow my chances at a college like UIUC for that decision if its a significant difference in admission rates.
But if you get accepted for something you really don’t want to be doing what good is that? Please also don’t fall into the trap of saying I can switch majors because that is not always as easy as you think.
Think of CS as more software, CE as more hardware. Which do you prefer?
Guys, I appreciate the answers but I believe you guys are reading the question wrong. I know the difference between the majors, what I’m asking is if there is a significant different in competitiveness / admission rates for both majors in a UNI like UIUC.
We are reading you correctly. If there is a difference in admissions competitiveness then transferring to the other major will be virtually impossible.
I’m not trying to get in one then transfer. I’m just literally asking if there is a significant different in competitiveness in admission rates for both majors so that I can decide which one I want to apply for.
You are not listening to the advice given above.
I think you are missing the advice being offered. You should pursue what you want to learn not what is the easiest route to get into a particular school. If you want to study computer science apply for computer science.
