I'm wondering what the main difference is between Computer Science at CAS vs Information Science at CAS/CALS. I heard that IS involves a bit more of social science than CS, but wouldn't that be true also for CS which is in the college of arts and sciences? Also, how does the job outlook, salary, grad school options compare for these two majors? Thanks.

CS in CAS is essentially the same major as CS in engineering, but with different college requirements (so in CAS you have to take a language as well as other things), so that should kind of tell you the kind of rigor the CS degree will have. Information science does have a lot more social science than CS and less hardcore programming. it seems that IS in CALS or CAS are basically have the same major requirements, but different college requirements (in CALS you must take Bio) and in CAS you end up with a BA and in CALS you end up with a BS. the ISST withing the college of engineering is more similar to CS than IS in CALS/CAS.

For both majors, job outlooks and grad school options are pretty good. CS majors, in particular, are always in high demand and end up with one of the highest starting salaries of all majors. My opinion is that the more technical degree (CS or ISST) would have the greatest flexibility in both grad school and jobs. But infosci at cornell is extremely well regarded regardless of whether you complete the major in CALS, CAS, or CoE.
