<p>Firstly, let’s be clear. OP is an undergrad (it’s implied). At that level, there is no absolutely difference in reputation. I do think UWaterloo is on the same tier as UIUC. Understand that UIUC is considered to be a tier below MIT/Stanford/CMU/Berkeley, and that UWaterloo is the best CS school in Canada. I work in Silicon Valley. That is my perception. We may disagree.</p>
<p>Courses may be of varying “size”. Some courses are 3 credit hours, others are 4 credit hours, and still others are (less frequently) other numbers of credit hours (like 1, 2, or 5 credit hours).</p>
<p>At most schools using this method of counting credits, most courses are 3 or 4 credit hours. The course catalog will show what credit hours each course is.</p>
<p>The nominal workload is that 1 credit hour = 3 hours per week of work in and out of class, with usually around 1 hour in class. So a 15 credit hour course load is supposed to mean about 15 hours of class time and 30 hours of out of class time on school work.</p>
