Computer Science

I am junior and very interested in Cornell for Computer Science. I have the GPA (4.6 weighted) and scores (33 ACT) to put me in the range of acceptability. Any Cornell Computer Science majors or alumni out there who can give me advice on increasing my changes?

You’re ACT and GPA are more than acceptable. Literally, you don’t need to improve them, (you can if it makes you feel better and don’t slack off). If you want to major in Computer Science, go do work in the field now, (make your own program or game, etc). You can go take classes in Community College, University, etc. Go to competitions or maybe make an application.
My point is: you have the educational skeleton Cornell wants, now just add the “meat” of your application. The more ‘computer science’ related, the better.

*Your… autocorrect :o

ZARYCO your stats are very comparable to my sons. 4.0GPA, 4.25 weighted, 34 ACT and he will be majoring in Computer Science. FYI he is a senior and has applied RD to Cornell as well as UMD (I see you on that post as well). He has been accepted to UIUC Honors (their honors program is by stats only) and we anticipate a Presidential award (stats), UMD we anticipate Honors and at least a partial B/K award or he he will not attend. Cornell we anticipate acceptance but no award. You should look at Ga Tech since you are from Fla.

Do you know much about programming right now?
If not, try taking a class somewhere over this year or maybe try teaching yourself. Over next summer, try for a CS related camp or maybe even an internship. In the mean time, set projects for yourself. What have you always wanted to do with programming? Cornell likes to see genuine passion in the application.

Please contact if you would more help or information.

Thanks for all the advice. I hear that Georgia Tech is not the most fun place to go to college. Very low graduation rate and supposedly the workload is ridiculous. I don’t mind working but I also want to have a great college experience. Regardless, I plan to visit GT and decide for myself.

Hippoman, thanks! I have been going to ID Tech and taking programming and programming related courses since I was 8. I took AP Comp Sci last year, then switched this year to full dual enrollment program and took college Intro to C. I am taking more advanced college course spring semester. I am entering my first programming competition in February. Finally, I started an organization where we obtain laptops for disadvantage middle schoolers and get them programming in Java. We do it live and online. It is new but growing fast. I definitely have the passion. Thanks.

Bonee - thanks. Sounds very similar. Really like UMD and it is a great option for CS. I know schools like UWM, UIUC and UMASS are also good, but they are not as accessible from FL. UMD is much easier to get to so that will probably be a top choice.
