Computer Science

I am a prospective undergraduate international student.
Lately, I have been busy filling up forms for colleges.
I wish to study Computer Science.
However, most colleges are offering Bachelors in Computer Engineering( BCoE) and not CSE. In fact, they are offering Bachelors in Computer Science( BCS). Though the second choice seems tempting, but if I go with BCS then I wouldn’t be called an ENGINEER !
Can someone advice me on the same ? Is it fine to go for BCS ?

I have the same dilemma.

I want to do CS but also be an engineer. xD
So what I’ve decided is, no matter what school I end up in, I am double majoring Computer Science and Computer Engineering. American schools do give that flexibility.

One of my good friends, who is currently at UChic told me that it doesn’t matter at all. Both majors have a lot in common( in terms of courses), yet are different. Computer Engineering involves more of Physics and Computer Science has more Mathematics to it. Many companies like Amazon don’t even care whether you fetch a B.Engineering or B.Science. I just wanted to be more of a Scientist than an Engineer.
It is the ‘Engineer’ Tag, that we Indians hype a lot about.

What is called 'engineer ’ in the US and in your country may not overlap.
If you graduate with a bachelor’s degree in CS you would be called 'engineer ’ in Germany or France. 'engineering ’ has a practical aspects to it in the US. (think HochSchule vs. universitaet).
Cse = hardware
CS = theory, AI, software…

Your CS will most probably be in an engineering college.
Both computer engineering and computer science are given a BS(Bachelor of Science) degree. There is no BE or BTech in the US.
Computer Engineering is all hardware and circuit stuff.
Computer Science is software, programming stuff.

In most schools, CS is in the college of engineering and you’ll find no difference from other engineering majors. In some universities, they may put CS in College of Arts & Sciences or even have a separate college for Computer Science(which is the best).

This doesn’t really matter, but one of the most common job titles for a CS degree is a “Software Engineer”. So, you would even still get the engineering title. But, as others have said, there’s not really a difference.

Completely agree with @wolfwing123

It does not matter whether you have done bachelors in computer science or CSE. The whole thing depends on how much knowledge you have in your field. If you get placed in good company you will also be called an engineer. :slight_smile:
