Anyone doing computer science class of 2022 on here?
I am! :-h
Excellent! See you at the CEPS thing April 7!
My son got accepted into the CS major at UNH. Do you either of you know much about the CS department there? We’re from Massachusetts and waiting to hear back from UMass-Amherst (which has a big, well-respected CS department). He can’t make the CEPS thing on April 7 because he finally got tickets to PAX East, and it’s ON THAT DAY! He’ll probably go to the alternate open house on March 30. Congrats to you!
I know its a small program, with about 300-400 students to my understanding. I went on a bit of a tour of CS at UNH a while ago, and the professors seem genuinely kind and interested.
Thanks @nickv411 for the info. Sounds good!
errr … if you get into Umass Amherst go there. Just look at rankings and also ask schools for hiring statistics/placement. Here’s another good data point. Since as engineers numbers matter … take for instance NC State which is above the top 50 in engineering schools with also division 1 athletics and in a metropolitan city with an out of state total cost around $42k. UNH with a ranking well below 100 total cost for NH resident around $30k and non-resident around $44k. So think about that. A top student even from NH going to NC State at a MUCH better engineering school with no FA only pays plus $48k in 4 years. Thats nothing. Thats less than a yearly salary with most engineers for the loan.
@doc_crate Yes, I realize UMass is a better school. My son seems put off by it due to its size. UNH is a bit smaller. He got good financial aid at UNH so it would be pretty inexpensive if he went there. He’s not interested in engineering at this point. He got into WPI with only a little bit of scholarship+FA so I’m not sure we’ll be able to consider that option. He seems interested in Clark University because it’s small and because he thinks he’ll fit in with the accepting, quirky kids there, BUT the CS department there is tiny!
