Computer Science?

First off, may I say I am a proud, relieved, and very grateful ED acceptee for the class of 2012! Yippee! (I think being Quaker helps more than somewhat, as I do not think my application/credentials were not nearly half as impressive as all the "chance me" threads I see around here, though Hav had to have seen something...I do think I wrote very awesome essays). This is also my first post on CC, after a while of lurking here and there.

Anyway, I have read over many of HC Alum's and others posts singing the praises of ford's Natural Sciences departments and how the only NAS LAC prof is at Hav, all the HHMI funding, Bruce Partridge is the man (I sat in on one of his classes this november), et cetera.

One thing I am curious about is if anyone knows anything similarly outstanding about the computer science department? After all, CompSci is a natural science too, right? Surely it should be just as good as the others? I'm just curious because I am fairly interested in it as a major (along with zillions of others, not the least of which are Cities@BMC, PoliSci, or Physics), but I quite literally have not found any 3rd party information about the computer department. I assume that small liberal arts colleges, including Haverford, are not well known for their computer science departments (That's what the RPIs and MITs of this world are for), but I've noticed they all seem to have one.

So yeah, does anyone have anything to say for/against Computer Science at Haverford? Current students who are majoring or taken a course they liked, etc?

Thanks!

hey haverguy,
Congrats on ED acceptance! I guess we'll be classmates. What I might do, since you are already into Haverford and not looking for anything to sway your opinion from going there, is email a professor. From my experience( which is not much, but I have sat in on a couple classes), the professors are very friendly, open, and seemingly accessible. I'm sure they would be willing to answer any questions you may have.

Meet You Soon!

Comp sci is a relatively new major (was a minor for a while). The dept is also bi-college. From what I understand, the profs are great guys and are better 1:1 than as lecturers. Of course, that’s probably in comparison to other HC faculty who are spectacular in front of the classroom. I also hear it’s pretty fast paced and a difficult major. I think intro courses are listed as “no prerequisites” but one actually needs some familiarity beforehand… so be warned. The advice I heard is to use office hours and student help sessions if you’re not as familiar with the subject as classmates. It also seems the work that is done is also applied so you can work on interdisciplinary projects with economics, biology, physics and astronomy, ect.
