To any computer majors: what is the comp sci. program like at UVA?

Are you asking about the BA CS program in CLAS or the SEAS CS program? Or computer engineering (also different)?

broad question. Can you be more specific?

Sorry, I was actually referring to the BA CS program. Though I assumed it wouldn't be drastically different from the B.S. Well, other than having more science general requirements and being significantly smaller.

And I was wondering more specificly about the quality of the program and the selection of classes.

To what extent can the CS program be absorbed into Cogsci? When is it worth making it a separate major?

Just keep in mind, most majors only let you share, at most, 2 courses of the required 9 or 10 for the major, so it's not like you can take all of the same classes and have 2 majors. For instance, Stat won't let you have ANY classes from your math major count for their minor. You should really consult a cogsci advisor for your exact question though.

galoisien, for the purposes of graduate school (and in general, really), coursework matters more than major distinctions. I wouldn't worry about that at all as long as it doesn't prevent you from getting into the courses you're interested in or need for some future academic purpose.

differences: Computer Science BA - Major Differences
class selection: same between BA and BS - it's only one department. the classes can be cool, there's a "defense of the dark arts" class on computer viruses.
like most other majors, uva's cs is what you make of it. it can take you great places (just check out cs.virginia.edu) or nowhere special.

like i said in another thread, there's an interest meeting in the spring so if you're a uva student then you can get info there then.

qwilde, the program is brand new in CLAS but I would say the quality is quite good, but very much influenced by how you make it. Since there are so many open electives you are going to need to make sure that you talk to someone and get some direction in your class selection. For major questions, talk to David Evans, he runs the program and can help you out a lot. I spent a long time talking with him about it.

galoisien, there is not much overlap so integration wouldn't be hard.

Thanks ehiunno. I'm not actually a student, but I'm considering transferring so I was just curious as to what others thought (more specifically actual students) about the program. Thanks again.

oh ok. What year would you be transferring into?

I'd either be applying for spring admission as a sophmore or fall admission as a junior.
