One more question from me before I head down to Wake next week.

I noticed stores selling laptop locks for college. Is it necessary to get these locks? Not sure how they work, but I'm sure I could figure it out. Do most people actually get these locks and use them regularly?

some people use locks. I do, but not everyone does. My reasoning is that if youcan lock it and it only takes a milisecond to do it, why not? The kids who get their laptops stolen (it happens rarely, but i know a kid it happened to) are not smart about their property (leaving room unlocked all day long, showing off special programs, etc). In all honesty Wake isn't a high crime campus but at the end of the day its your call.

Actually, the only thing that I had to ask about in the mandatory computer information session that they made us all go to during orientation (third day maybe) was how to work my laptop lock. And it took them a few minutes to figure out how to do it. I own a lock, and while I've used it a number of times, I don't tend to use it regularly. I took it with me when I went abroad, and I've always used it if there was a reason that I needed to leave my room unlocked when I wasn't going to be on the hall. It's definitely been good to have it when I felt like I needed it. If nothing else, the peace of mind has, for me, been worth the $30.

My son never used a lock, however always kept his dorm room locked. There seems to be very little crime on campus. Son said he would see people leave their laptops on library tables for an hour or more while they went to eat and no one would touch them. Think it is what you are comfortable with. And I certainly wouldn't recommend leaving it unattended---why tempt fate?
