What are some advantages of buying a computer on campus? Do students get discounts? I would appreciate it if some of you could toss in your thoughts.

Students get discounts from the computer showcase, though usually you can get a comparably priced/specced computer if you wait for the right sales. If you buy a Mac from the student showcase, you get some kind of iPod free, which I'd imagine is a big draw for lots of college students. I think the main advantage of buying from the student showcase is that they generally all come with a pretty solid 3 year warranty, and if things break it's much easier to get it serviced on campus as opposed to mailing it back to the manufacturer.

dilksy is right, the advantage to buying at the Computer Showcase is service.

oh, well i bought mine from http://www.dell.com/michigan doesn't that also get you service on campus since it's via Michigan?

I think the best part about computer showcase is its software prices. Some of those programs are dirt cheap!!! Do you guys know if we are allowed to buy programs from computer showcase during our orientation? I really want office for my macbook pro for $40.

You can get Microsoft Office for Mac for 40$?? It's like $150 at the Apple store!

U-M Computer Showcase: Software for Macintosh

$15 for Office 2004 pro, $50 for office 2008.

You're only allowed to get one copy of each software title for the student price. However, for certain software (for example, MS Office), you're allowed to install it on one desktop and one laptop (there's some condition about having a backup on a portable device that allows you to do this).

i bought my vista ultimate for like 13$ or so at the showcase. Great pricing on software. For computers, they seem to overprice, but they offer great waranties, service, and some other stuff (though personally, I think its just to up the price a little). If your a computer novice, a buy from the computer showcase is great for you get the service you need at a reasonable price.

*notebooks from computer showcase are premade and cannot be configured to your liking. If you want, you can buy at dell, lenovo, and apple with some descent student discounts.

oh yeah, the computers at the showcase come with vista ultimate/osX microsoft office 2007/2008, security lock, ethernet cable, 2gb flash drive, and a slipcase... so that saves you a little more than 100$ (as opposed to buying it seperately from the computer store itself)

Thanks for all the replies!
