Right now I'm running a pretty crappy laptop, a bit low on RAM too. I was wondering what the computer situation is like at Wash U? Is a laptop really necessary? Right now, I'm thinking about just getting a netbook and taking my desktop.

Like most colleges, it will depend on whether you want to lug around a laptop around all day, or if you’ll be productive with it. If you won’t get distracted, then by all means bring just a netbook and your desktop. From what I’ve seen in large lecture classes, most students still prefer notebook and pencil rather than a laptop.

In freshmen math and science classes, almost no one has a laptop. Classes like psychology see maybe 20% of students with laptops. When I was in a computer science course nearly 50% had a laptop. Go figure. One guy even had two.

Not that many people have netbooks. Again, like most colleges, most people prefer a Macbook.

I know a ton of students with netbooks. I don’t know a situation where that would ever be a problem for a class, since the only majors that have computer requirements are the art school (and not until junior year).
