Computers- 64 bit operating systems not compatible with ResNet!

I recently bought a new laptop with Vista 64 bit Operating System only to find out 64 bit Operating Systems are not usable with resNet in the residence halls ! Needless to say, I was certainly disappointed with CalPoly. Anyone here have any suggestions, ideas , info regarding this situation?

How many of you are in the same situation?

Thanks!

One thing you could do if your a bit computer savvy is to install linux and dual-boot linux and vista. I used vista for half of last year and had a lot of problems so much so that I saved the resnet phone number on my cell. I installed linux and everything was fine as fas as internet browsing for the rest of the year.

Thanks. I heard the same thing about dual booting Vista 64 and XP 32 bit from a computer savvy friend. I will try to find someone to help me with this. Also I may just look for a cheap used laptop to connect to ResNet for internet and email access.

Do you know if CalPoly is working on fixing the 64 bit compatability problem? Seems like this would be getting to be a more common problem with the increasing numbers of 64 bit machines.

Not sure if they are. best bet would be to dual boot XP and Vista.

I was worried about the same thing before I moved into the school, so I installed ubuntu and XP onto my laptop. And to my relief, my 64-bit Vista OS worked perfectly fine with their Resnet internet. But you might have to install several of the “required” programs in order to use their internet, which is a bit of a hassle but it all worked out.
