Computers at ND

I was wondering what kind of computer everyone is bringing to school in the fall. I received the information that said that practically everyone brings a laptop but I am not really keen on bringing a laptop (I like games and laptops just don't have the performance I need in my price range. Further, I build computers and I love that DIY-machine-running-Fedora feel). Is a notebook necessary? Can a desktop prove a viable tech solution?

Desktops are fine... I never take mylaptop to class and I'd say 95% of students don't either. The only non-computer science type class that I can think of that requires you to bring one to class is the FYC technology based class (this is different from the regular FYC and the Community Service based FYC). But with the way things have been changing at ND (especially the expansion of Wi-Fi internet access to dorms and most other places), I wouldn't be surprised if laptops become used more in classes.

I am one who uses my laptop in class and only has a laptop but I can relate with you as I am a computer nerd (I am a computer tech/network admin with a watercooled desktop at home). There are several gamers I know who have desktops, Docmom's child being one of them :) and that seems to work fine. Yes, I would say most of us have laptops but they certainly aren't necessary; bring what you are most comfortable with. Enjoy the games and being a crazy computer person like myself.

I've seen both...and people with both!
