Please discuss which laptops are most favored by Yale students ie MAC vs PC, which brand for reliability and ease of repair and power requirements. THANKS

I just got a Toshiba PC right now this morning. It's a fairly nice computer at a fairly decent price. I'm planning on bringing it to Yale with me.

The most common brand seems to be Dell, with a good number of people I know (including myself) owning Dell Latitudes. Macs would be the next most common, and then there's a scattering of other brands. The main advantage of a Dell is that Yale has Dell certified technicians on campus who can fix your computer if something goes wrong (this may be true for Macs too, I'm not sure). Dells are also generally cheaper. On the other hand, they have a bit of a reputation for being lower quality than some other brands. Whatever you get, make sure you get a 4 year warranty if you're planning to use the same computer the whole time you're at Yale.

My friend shelled out some major moolah for his laptop-3K. Too much?

That's excessive especially for a college student who might use only 50% of the potential. One should only spend 3000 plus on a computer for gaming or advance graphic design, etc.

Should we order our computer wit VISTA or XP? THANKS

We are almost there, which computers have the class of 2011 bought and which operating system?

I bought a laptop at the beginning of senior year and I'm taking it to Yale this fall. The specs are really good and it runs XP which in my opinion is better than Vista or at least until Vista bugs are all resolved.

For me, Vista's worked as well as XP. Most laptops will come standard with Vista now, so there's no point in not getting it.
