I was wondering if it is necessary or useful to have your laptop during orientation? My dad left my laptop in Italy and apparently I will be able to get it after the 19th, which is just after the 16-18 august orientation. I'm worried that I'll need the laptop during orientation? Thanks!

No, you don't need your computer at orientation. I didn't bring one and I was perfectly fine. Actually, I only saw one person that brought their laptop. The only time I would have liked to have a computer was to see the course descriptions in the online course directory. By August 16, I would assume you already have your courses set up so you wouldn't need to look anything up online.

For my orientation, the primary use of a laptop was looking up instructor ratings. Very few students had laptops, though, and you have plenty of time to find a desktop if needed.

I'd leave the laptop at home because it's tough to secure them.

My S picked up his laptop during orientation. That gave him a chance to test everything while he was on Grounds and do all the necessary personalization required to get on the UVA network. He probably spent about an hour and will be glad that's one less thing he'll have to worry about on move-in day.

There's nothing you'll need your computer for at orientation. Have you already purchased it?

aaaaaa ok phew, I was really worried that Id somehow be lost without a laptop. I guess Ill just have to do without it until after orientation hehe. Cav yea I purchased it long time ago, but my dad left it in Italy for his brother to use and the airline delayed his flight so its gonna arrive late.

Scheduling purposes are the only thing I can think of that you could need a computer for during orientation. The online COD was very helpful in choosing the right classes. Since they are about three easily accessible computer labs on grounds, you'll be fine in that department.
