Computers for Chicago

If I want to study alot of math and economics, will a mac be sufficient to run the required programs? I know the University suggests Macs and Dells, but I wanted to know if anyone had specific information about the preferences of these departments. Thanks!

You may want to talk with someone in these departments, but it is my son's impression (he worked for rescom last year) that either would be ok. There is a Mac version of Mathematica, and you could run in Windows emulation if you had to.

Tons of students have Macs. It should be fine.

Macs are far superior to windows, esp. for college students: they are much more reliable, and last much longer.

And, although this is increasingly more rare, you can always boot up in windows or linux if you need to run a program that won't run on mac. Go to the apple website, check out Leopard, and look at the laptops they offer--how can you not go mac??

p.s. the only advantage to buying a Dell laptop is you can buy cheap laptops from them, like under a grand notebooks

when i went for an accepted students day in april. Both the students in the room i stayed in had macs fyi
