Does it die down in college or are there a lot of console/pc gamers in there dorms?

lots of video and computer game use in dorms

I can't live without comp games

computer games are the answer to all of life's problems (well not really).

It's kind of hit or miss at some schools though for online games because of bandwidth and latency issues. It may have gotten better but a few years ago, it was either gaming or filesharing but not both. Either the school had open ports and thus was always flooded with filesharing or they closed the filesharing ports and there was enough bandwidth available to get a good ping.

It depends from school to school as well.

I know my school has a firewall up to prevent illegal downloads. That firewall pretty much takes down any chance of online gaming at high speeds.

In my college, we're big gamers... We get around the no online gaming thing by having 8 player LAN games in one computer lab of Call of Duty most evenings. :)

I know a girl who got so addicted to The Sims that she lost her scholarship to and ended up on academic probation.

She wasn't a gamer. Gamers are the leet forces of this universe.

Gamers would be able to pull it off and keep the scholarship.

I do hope I get good pings next year or else I am going to have to look for someone's off-campus internet access that I can route to my dorm room. I dont think its a big enough school that there will be servers running on the LAN with lots of people (Like UMN:tc)

I will die if my college does not have good enough network capabilities to support decently high speed gaming connections.

Mavin: right now it seems to look as if it will at the very least be tollerable. Bandwidth has become so much cheaper (even in large quantities) than the times of strife (for gamers) that I was refering to (right after the end of napster and the tide of filesharers that followed). The absolute best pings may still come from an off campus apartment with a dedicated connection but it should be ok and you can probobly find people to LAN with if need be.

Gah... There is no lan games for guild wars or world of warcraft

ah, you will be fine with MMORPGs

your ping isnt so crucial with them as it is in modern FPSs

At one point, I was addicted to playing chess on the internet. Took me like two years to give it up.

^ um, yeah, I'm going through that. I think it's dying down, but I can't go a day without playing a game or two.

I literally had to get in my car and drive somewhere just to get away from the comp. It was that bad.

and it was b/c I suck at chess and kept losing!!!
