Do you bring your computer to your classes and everywhere you go? Or does it stay in your dorm room?

When did you buy your computer?

Everyone I know has a laptop. A laptop is handy because I can bring it with me when I go places (e.g. home during breaks) and have access to all of my files. I am at a small college where students don't bring their laptop to class to take notes, but it's quite common to do that at many other universities.

I bought my laptop a month or two before I left for college.

EVERYONE has a computer at my school, since it's kindof a necessity to be able to check student email, angel (an online program where profs can post powerpoints, assignments, grades and such), and insite.

At my school, though, all freshmen get HP laptops free (even though technically they come out of your tuition somewhere), so we all got them the first week.

what school gives free lap tops that you go to?

St. John's and Berea give all first-year student a laptop, and I am sure there are others.

I know that Babson College and Saint Johns University give you free laptops. Buy this might be a bit deceiving because I bet that they put some of the costs in the tuition. Almost everyone I know has a laptop. Most people bring them to class to take notes or do other work. Some of my classes don't allow laptops. Professors know that students are easily distracted by them.

Villanova also gives new laptops freshman year and then again junior year. (you do have to turn in your old laptop)

I would say probably 99% of people in college have computers. It's necessary because professors send emails out quite a bit (it's the "official form of communication" at my school), plus there is a campuswide program called Blackboard that the profs use to post assignments, readings, show your grades, etc.

I have a laptop that I got right before sophomore year, before that I had a desktop. My computer's battery is a piece of crap, so the comp. has to be plugged in all the time to stay on, so I don't carry it with me very much... also, it's really heavy!
There are many computer labs on my campus though, that people can go to. I don't have a printer so that is what I do to print off assignments and such.
One of my friends brings his laptop basically everywhere, but his is alot smaller than mine.

If we buy a laptop, how does the internet connection work?

Sorry for this newbie question. I've never owned a laptop--only a desktop computer so I have no idea how laptops would get wireless connection since the 'homebase' computer would be miles and miles away?

it would get internet through a wireless connection based locally.

most campuses these days have wireless internet coverage throughout campuses.

Internet is via wireless connection and/or ethernet connection. I suggest bringing an ethernet cord with you when you move into the dorm. Often times, ethernet connection is faster than wireless connection in the dorms. I recommend a laptop because there may be times when you need to do group work outside of your dorm room.

I go to a really small school in MA called Becker College.

We have wireless connections on campus, as well, though like someone else mentioned, it's best to bring an ethernet cord. You actually can't get enough service in most of the dorms here to connect only through wireless.
