Computers reading applications?

I just read an interesting article on the UC schools wanting to rely less on computers (and more on humans) screening the applications. Apparently, some students are currently admitted based on a computer review.

Does anyone know if there have been actual studies comparing computer admits with human admits? I'm thinking either of a test-scenario where you just look to see if they would have made the same decisions, or an actual case where a class was admitted entirely by computer (or some other process that doesn't involve human subjectivity) and then compared to a class admitted in the traditional way? I realize the latter would be extremely unlikely, but has anyone heard of such a thing?
