Computers

someone said that the academy says "the network is not for private/recreational use" How strictly is that part enforced? I know the no-AIM is not enforced at all, but do they run network monitoring to nab cadets playing games? I doubt anyone has time for games but still...

You can use the network for almost anything you want except porn and anything illegal. Like I said earlier, I'm not sure about online games (like counter-strike or Everquest). We have a unique situation here because this is one of the only places where personal computers and not just government computers are hooked up to a government network.

Comm squad monitors everything that goes on with everyone's computers. As long as you're abiding by the rules (which are not as strict as implied by "not for private/recreational use"), you'll be fine. You'll understand once you get here. Just realize that when your computer is hooked up to the network (as well as anything else you hook up to the network, including if you end up getting a non-issued computer), it's considered gov't property.

Random question, but why's everyone on at this time of night??

I got back from a movie two hours ago and I have been playing tetris since. (<a href="http://www.wolfgaming.net%5B/url%5D">www.wolfgaming.net</a>) so no I'm not a total geek. ;)

Do they block all the ports of BitTorrent on the network? Like has anyone tried to dl stuff mp3s, etc?

Firewalls......... Gamers should forget it. Aleast until they get out on those much loved liberties & go in search of some internet cafes. ;)

"Random question, but why's everyone on at this time of night??"

Just got done with a much needed battlefield 2 late night marathon. This week was really stressful with exams, academy stuff and home life so in the ended i just need a chance to blow ***** up.

Battlefield 2!!! What servers do you frequent? I play on WOLF servers. Neat to find another games out there. :D

I dont have any frequent servers. I find one with a ping time under 100 ms (150 if im desperate but most kick with pings greater than 150), has most of its player slots filled and i can join.

I wanna get special forces to use the extra maps. If you're ever on, look for my screen name...its cleverly the same as my name here (and just about anything else im registered for). I just wish there was someway to force the sounds to be in english when you are not on the USMC side. When you are on USMC you dont have to read everything, IE a person needs a pick up you hear "hey, i need a ride!" or "ARTILERY YOUR AREA!!". If you are on a non-USMC side you have to read each line cause i dont speach japanese, chinese or MEC...

Pretty much the Internet is set up the way it is setup, and you aren't allowed to change it.

yah it's pretty crazy here... a few people got e-mails saying to edit their myspace enteries etc b/c it violated some saftey something something.... I don't know... but it's pretty crazy..

even when you're home and you try to connect your gov't issued comp to the internet it won't work.

It is possible to hook up your computer at home. It isn't locked up or anything, you just have to change all the settings to be compatible with your ISP at home. And then you have to change them back when you return.

Sorry to bring up an extremely old topic, I had to search this bad boy to even find it, but has there been any more word on wheter the class of 2010 will be getting tablet laptops?

On the "instruction to appointee" packet that I recieved 2 days ago, it says that the laptops won't be chosen until May, but it'll be similar to the laptop class of 2009 recieved (Dell Latitude D610). It says nothing about tablet notebooks.

really....surfnkid mentioned something about them earlier in this thread, and I saw something about them on their website...don't ask me how to find it, I put air force academy tablet laptops in google and I followed some websites to it, but it said that they had tried them out with students...but I guess if the packet says otherwise, can't argue with the packet.

By the way, the packet you mentioned....thats not the "after appointment" packet, is it?

The packet labeled "appointee instructions." It is the packet that I recieved after I have accepted the appointment. It has a lot of information about Inprocessing day. I don't know much about the tablet laptop rumor. I'm just stating what is said in the packet. But you know, they haven't chosen the laptops yet. So, perhaps they'll give us a tablet.

You know what? I should just type what is in the packet verbatim.

"All fourth-classmen will be issued a new notebook computer in August, two days before the fall semester begins. It will come pre-loaded with all software required for cadets, inculding Microsoft Office, math packages, AutoDesk, and antivirus software. Since the computer will not be selected until May 2006, we cannot list the specifications yet; however, it will be similar to the computer issued to class of 2009 [Dell Latitude D610]." (Instuctions to appointees pg 3)

With the computers can cadets do whatever they want witht hem like surf the web, install games, AOL Instant Messenger/Email, etc?

"can cadets do whatever they want witht hem..."

far from it, read some of the previous posts because they explain alot of dos and donts.
