Computers

Hey, is there a certain kind of computer that we're suggested to bring? Laptop? Desktop? PC? Macintosh? Any specific make or model?

Yale has recommendations somewhere on the "computing" portion of their website...I can't remember the address, but it's easy to find.

Pretty much any computer you want to bring is fine. You're probably not going to be using it for much besides word processing and internet anyway.

That said, I recommend a laptop over a desktop. You probably won't have very many instances where you absolutely have to have a portable computer, but it's definitely convenient if you want to type your notes in class or whatever. I also had an experience where at my job there are only 2 computers for about 4 people at any given time, so being able to bring my laptop was key.

But it's too early to be thinking about this stuff anyway ;-)

most def get a laptop. i still have not seen a student with a desktop in their room. i recommend an iBook, 'cuz they're damn sexy.

I don't do Apples. They confuse me.

get the new vaio that come sin like multiple colors... so hot. :)

Do a decent amount of people actually take notes on a notebook/tablet PC at Yale in general?

In my classes there haven't been too many (maybe like 1/10 people), but it's all a matter of preference & your professor's lecture style. I personally take really crappy notes by hand so it's much easier for me to just type them

I'm taking my laptop :)

in my bigger lectures people bring computers to take notes... makes it easier to share them that way i guess. Go for a laptop, that's what everyone has. don't worry about not having computing power, unless you're like editing video for a film major or something you won't really have time to play games and crap like that. at least i don't. maybe i'm doing something wrong... lol.

anyways, yeah. make sure to bring some good speakers too. and an ethernet cable. because although there is wireless around campus the dorms aren't wireless (consider bringing your own wireless router). dells and apples are the most common computers, but i also see some IBMs and other brands around.

do the dorms have space for a full-size desktop computer to fit easily? And will it make the room really hot? (my comp. has overheating problems bc I built it myself and the water-cooling only works 90% of the time)

A full-size tower will be cramped in your dorm room but some people do it anyway. One of the all-in-one Macs or a newer smaller PC will be fine. I do recommend a notebook, though; you want to have the freedom even if it isn't completely necessary. I take my laptop to work and production meetings as well as classes and the library. As for heating, your room will be ridiculously hot anyway (Yale has heating problems...don't ask). I have my fan on and windows open a lot during the winter.
