Topic was addressed a while back

You can get a big student discount on either ThinkPad (IBM/Lenovo) or MAC laptops.

I used a ThinkPad laptop and loved it; my friend had a desktop (IBM I think) and loved it. Depends on how much you take notes or whatever on your computer vs. notebooks (paper ones) because when you're in the library there are lots of computers but they're not always available. Either way, you can always email yourself assignments and work on them on lib. computers.
I prefer Windows but MACs work better for certain science assignments where you need data (pics) off the server which was originally entered in MAC format...also, MACs (white ones, I think PowerBooks) have a lot longer battery time...but I definitely prefer Windows.
Overall, I'd say a laptop is more convenient, but you can get along either way.

The new Macs can run both MacOS and Windows. So you can get the best of both worlds.

I think we've decided on a Lenovo/Thinkpad laptop, but in looking at the website, I can't tell what if any software comes on it if we order it through the Harvard site. Does any basic software, like Word, come on it? Or do we need to order software separately? Every other computer we've ever bought has had a good bit of software on them already, but I couldn't tell about this one.
