I plan on bringing a laptop to Duke, but I was wondering if it is common for students there to also have their own desktop PC in their dorm room. I really like mine because it is much faster and easier to use than a laptop, just not as portable.

Get a MAC!

And then share it with me! ;)

to answer your question, very very few students have both a desktop and a laptop pc. having said that…if you really dont like a laptop and work better on the desktop then bring it … having both wont make you look weird. nobody will care. probably the bigger issue will be that it’ll take up room and make things even MORE hot for the first 2 to 6 weeks if you are in an un-air conditioned dorm.

Yeah, note that you’re only given one desk and you probably wont have room for another if you’re in a double. I’d say you probably don’t need the desktop, but it’s up to you. But no, it’s not common.
