COMs programs

Working with D to help her select colleges to apply to this fall. Her interests seem to be mostly towards COMs, not journalism, but more on the "researchy" side of COMs rather than mass media, e.g., how does the structure of the written word affect perception, the effect of verbal and written communication on the society and its attitudes, yada, yada...

She is a city girl, but has not lived in a large city for 12+ years. We do want her to go to a large city so she can experience life there firsthand and decide for herself where she wants to live after graduation. Therefore we are limiting the search for "matches" to cities like LA, NY, Boston, Chicago. Solid GPA, reasonable APs, light sprinkling of Bs (no Cs), nothing unusual as far as ECs go. Her test scores are pretty good --- 33 on ACT, low 2200s on SAT.

We are not interested in the usual HYP stuff (nor would they be interested in us :-), so at this time the list goes something like

USC Annenberg
NYU Steinhardt
UCLA COMs Studies
Tufts X-college (more mass comms)
BU COMs school
Penn State COMs college
UW COMs dept (but it is in the north-west, so it is very low on our list due to geographical reasons - we currently live in the NW)

Are we missing something significant? Other than calling the departments and /or visiting, can anyone suggest a good way of getting some sense of what the programs are like? With the exception of Annenberg and Steihardt, the schools' web sites are pathetically inadequate.

Thanks - GG

She really needs to look at Wisconsin. One of the strongest Mass Comm programs in the country. I'm a student in the program interested in the research side of communication, specifically political communications. It's been great.

Transfer: thanks for the info. What particularly did you like about comm at Wisconsin, and what were your reasons for transferring there (I assume that is what you userID implies :-)

Yes, I am aware of Wisconsin's good reputation in comm
<a href="http://in-cites.com/research/2005/may_9_2005-1.html%5B/url%5D">http://in-cites.com/research/2005/may_9_2005-1.html</a></p>

However, the geographical location is similar to where she lives now (Portland OR) and this would not necessarily provide her with a dramatically different experience.

I have been impressed by the amount of research opportunities to undergrads and strong network of professors. I am not a transfer student.

Also, Madison is unlike any other city in the country, even Portland :) Besides, the upper NW is not like the upper Midwest.

Also try Emerson in Boston and Fordham in NYC.
