what is the difference between comsci las and eng?

The engineering Comp Sci program has the prestige in the engineering/techinical community. The LAS comp sci major has not been around for a loing time but hopefully it will be considered in the same vein as engineering comp sci. Both majors offer the same comp sci courses. The major difference is that the engineeering major must take the usual physics and chemistry courses that engineering majors take in the first two years and the LAS major does not have to take those courses. However, the LAS major is required to take more upper level math courses than the engineering major.

what makes the engineering compsci so prestigious?
thanks for ur reply though

i have a question, wouldnt you be taking the same computer science classes in las as the engineering department?

“what makes the engineering compsci so prestigious?”

UIUC’s engineering program is ranked very high overall; its comp sci is ranked very high on the graduate level. Bill Gates has said that Microsoft over the years has hired more comp sci graduates from UIUC than any other single university. Many coompanies seeking comp sci grads come to on-campus interview days.

“i have a question, wouldnt you be taking the same computer science classes in las as the engineering department?”

I mentioned above that both majors offer the same computer science courses.

oh, sorry, i was actually wondering how the comp sci department in las was not so prestigous?

It is a matter of age; the comp sci major in LAS has only been around about four to five years and thus does not have much of a track record yet.
