Greetings, to make this short, I’ve been wondering about CPP’s area - specifically Pomona. I’ve been hearing several times over and over that Pomona is a really bad city and is not well-served at all. My relatives and the people I’ve asked said it is similar to Compton or worse. Only positive thing I heard about Pomona was being the host of the Los Angeles County Fair and being home to other attractions. I’ve heard a lot of gangs and such live in Pomona also.
I never actually have been through all of Pomona, I did once but it was a quick stop to this fancy Goodwill (the store was great, but the area was decent - beautiful scenery because of the mountains however). Anyways, I know CPP is isolated from Pomona also, and I’ve passed by the campus several times when going on the Greyhound and it is a very beautiful and huge campus. But I want to know the city, is it really that bad CPP students, alumni, etc.?
I don’t mean to offend anyone, honestly - I just want to know the truth. CPP is a really awesome university it seems but I’m just wondering if Pomona is horrible as people say.
Appreciations
Alright, the best way for you to figure out if you like the place is to visit there. I will answer your questions as best as I can, since I am in the local area.
Some areas of Pomona are bad, yes. I personally do not consider Pomona around CPP to be bad. There are plenty of nice cities around Pomona, such as Claremont, San Dimas, La Verne, etc. Claremont has some of the best universities in the country and is a short drive. If you decide to rent a place in some areas of Pomona, you’ll have a bad time. But personally, the area around CPP is fine. Pretty much if you go west from the 57 freeway (which is where CPP is) you’re fine. Going east from the 57 and below the 10 freeway is not exactly the nicest area. The area around CPP is fine though, there are many schools in that area and nice homes near Mt SAC (JC college). Not all areas of Pomona are bad, trust me. Some are gross, some are a tad scary, but not all of them are horrible. If you stay near the campus, you’ll do great
Try to visit if you can and get a feel for the area.
I agree with @Gedelaine since I am also a local resident of the La Verne/Pomona area and a not so recent graduate of CPP. Some areas of Pomona are questionable but the immediate area around the campus is very nice. You are surrounded by many residential communites such as Diamond Bar, La Verne, San Dimas, West Covina and Covina Hills and there are restaurants, shopping and some attractions such as Raging Waters (water park), the LA country fair and fairgrounds. There has been alot of development around the campus since I attended in the dark ages, so it is not as isolated as it use to be. It is a great school, so the only way to really find out is to plan a visit and explore the surrounding area. I would never put Pomona into the same category as Compton (which is scary).
@Gedelaine and @Gumbymom - Appreciations to both of you.
