One of my best friends applied to UNC back in October. (we're in-state) He told me yesterday that UNC told him that they withdrew his application, because his counselor recommendation letter was not turned in.

He claims that he did turn in, and UNC told him to turn it in as soon as possible, and they would see what they could do for him.

Do you think he will still be considered, so close to the deadline? We don't go to the same school anymore, but I am 99% sure his stats look something like this:

White Male
GPA: ~3.5-3.8 unweighted, 4.9 weighted
Decent number of AP's, one or two with a 4 or above
Eagle Scout, 100/hr service club for 4 years, NHS

Do you think that since he is a strong candidate, that he will still be considered?

Funny thing, my application was withdrawn, also, due to a missing item. I emailed them and told them they had made a mistake and two days later I was told I was accepted, along with an apology. So there is hope for you friend. (I was a transfer student, though.)

If he checks his MyUNC and his application is still there, he should still be considered. That’s really weird though because this should have been cleared up before the early action decisions. Was he deferred? Or did he for some reason click regular decision but apply in October?

Because I applied early action and they lost my counselor statement over and over again. I called multiple times and sent lots of emails and it was finally processed on the third try maybe about a week before the decisions were supposed to come out. So it doesn’t make any sense that UNC would tell him that, especially at this time. They probably aren’t answering most emails, much less sending specific emails about incomplete applications. If he actually does get his counselor statement in like tomorrow, I guess he would have a shot.

But not to be mean, but if he applied in October and he is still missing the counselor statement, that is his fault. UNC sent out mass emails about incomplete applications probably sometime in December. If he just forgot about it till now and didn’t check to make sure UNC had received everything, that is his fault, not UNC’s. I checked like twice a day when I was trying to resubmit my counselor statement, and I eventually got it in with a lot of work. It’s not really far to the applicants, but they probably received about 40-50k application materials for each deadline, so it is your responsibility to make sure they have received it. Sorry if that’s harsh, but UNC sent out many emails saying to check your To Do List for any missing materials.

For some extra help, I was told to get my counselor to email the statement to cdowdy@email.unc.edu. So you can let him know that.

Yeah, he applied 2nd deadline but still finished his application really early. He is a really smart kid, but he doesn’t focus on getting things together sometimes!

I hope this doesn’t end up costing him admission to one of his top choices, especially since I want to see him there if I go!

that’s great, i am really happy for him!

also, it’s really nice that you were concerned enough about him to post here on his behalf. you’re a good friend.

I’m just worried about him. He’s going through a lot right now, which is not giving him the opportunity to focus on college like he should.

Thanks for the compliment!
