I have my profile on and many people consider my 300 page self-published fantasy novel a hook. Now, my concern is, I'm shooting for Columbia and Harvard as my top choices so I can major in their medical programs. Is this self-published (also, does this word indicate a weakness since it wasn't REALLY published) novel still going to help me with my admission chances even if I want to be a doctor? The only reason I did it was because I was in gifted last year and every student has to pick a research project/invention, etc.. to complete. I chose my book over creating a heart model ( I want to be a heart surgeon).. do you think this will help me at all or hurt me?

I currently don't have any ec's related to the medical field other than math team, but that really isn't a big deal. I'm applying to the Cancer Research centers at Northwestern and UChicago right now and I'm planning on writing my essay on how I have two passions: writing and medical knowledge and how since I chose my fantasy novel for gifted, this research program will give me an opportunity to pursue my other passion.

Is this essay choice a good idea?

sorry for the long post, this has just been worrying me.
