Concerned about Rochester environment any similar schools?

I've been looking at the University of Rochester for a while, it has a lot of the things I'm looking for (i.e. a medium size, research opportunities, northeast location, and good science program) but I'm concerned about the location. From what I've heard it's not too desirable. I don't mind the snow, just the environment of the town itself. I don't exactly know where else to look in terms of schools. Anyone know schools similar to Rochester?

I'm concerned about that as well. I've heard it's in a really bad area where it's not unusual for students to get mugged. It kind of worries me

that's exactly what I was thinking, so I'm looking for similar schools. Do you know of any similar ones?

I was pretty disappointed to find out it's in a bad area because I really love the school.

My suggestion is that you stop being so paranoid. And, if I may say so, stop being such babies. It's ridiculous that you wouldn't go to a school simply because you are afraid of the area. Carry some mace or something. You have to take some risks to reap the rewards

I'm not saying I wouldn't want to go, but I'm more catious of going.

I'm not definitely saying I won't apply simply because of the area. I'm simply looking for other options, that's all, so if someone could give me some, that would actually be helpful.

Actually, the campus is not really in a bad area. There are couple of low income housing areas near by, but I would not classify the area overall as bad. The campus is pretty self contained with the river forming one long boundry and Mt. Hope cemetary forming one, the medical campus forming the third, and a residential area making up the forth. There are no major roads through the campus. There are not a lot of shops eateries nearby, so you need to take the bus to get to those areas, but that is not a huge problem. The Eastman campus is in a not so great part of town, but if you go down there, the bus drops you off right near the main building so you don't have to walk near very far. Rochester is not the most charming city in the nation, but I would not be particularly worried about safety there and if the school has what you are looking for, it is certainly worth applying. Go and see for yourself and ask the students or admissions people about it.

Well, i know the OP said northeast, but for the other posters on this board, Rice has many similarities to U of Rochester. If I hadn't gone to Rice, I very well may have gone to Rochester.

thanks so much shennie!

U of R is not in a particularly "bad" area. Is it an urban campus? Yes. Does a student have to be a little streetwise on an urban campus? Yes. Perhaps the biggest drawback to the U of R campus is that it lacks places like restauarants and cafes to walk to easily. It is sort of hemmed in by the river. There is a gorgeous Victorian cemetary near by that many students jog in. Also there are lots of students living off campus in highly desireable parts of the city - the Park Ave neighborhood and the East End - and using public transportation or cars. Like all cities you have to be of the mind that you are going to take advantage of the good things cities offer and be smart about it. Eastman is smack downtown. Yes, there is panhandling, but the immediate area around Eastman is nice. It is also considered the "nightlife" section of Rochester with several clubs and music venues. I think you should visit and assess it for yourself. U of R seems to have a very good security team, including escort services to the outlying parking lots and other places (which can be a problem in any semi-urban area).
