Concerned for a friend...

I'm going to be attending MSU this fall (ChemE major) with quite a few of my friends from high school. However, one of them got a call about two weeks ago, telling him his admission had been revoked - after he had gone through orientation and picked out his classes and everything. The major cause of this was his GPA this last semester of senior year, as he got a 1.8 (W). Some of it was his fault, some of it wasn't; at the same time, his academic record the past four years has been exemplary to say the least. This last semester was really an outlier and this was all explained at his meeting with the admissions board this last week. They told him he'd be getting a decision any day now but really - what are his chances? Is there anything else he can do?

Some people he has talked to recommend said he enroll in a local university (we're located in southeast Michigan) such as WSU, EMU or a community college. If he were to go through with this, would it be easier transferring from a community college or Wayne State/Eastern Michigan after just a semester provided he gets a high GPA?

It would be easier to go to a local school and transfer to MSU after spending a semester (possibly a year) there. I am also going to MSU this fall and I just called housing the other day and they said that they have a lot more kids than they expected. So at this point, your friend might not be able to get in for this fall. But, that being said, if he had a really good reason for his 1.8, there is a chance that they would understand. The last thing they want to do is have to give him bad news.

We took my son to Green and White Day Friday and the admissions counselor said MSU revoked acceptances for 30 people this summer due to poor senior grades. They also are anticipating 7800 freshman this year.
