Concerned on College Admission

I have a much lower GPA than most students, a overall of 2.2-GPA, however I have had a 3.5 from my Junior Year and have taken AP Gov, enrolled in AP Psyc, AP Econ, and plan to have a 4.0 my Senior Year. I am also the DECA President, and have been to the International level in competition. If I scored a 34 on my ACT (I just took my test, and scored around that level on my all my pretests) . Will any college see past my mistakes as a Freshmen and Sophomore. If it matters, My dream school is Univ. of Virginia and my real concern is only this school.

Thank you very much

You will most likely not get into UVA with a 2.2 even with an upward trend and high test scores. If you are out of state then i would doubt that its even worth a shot. However there are lots of other great schools out there.

Many good colleges will look past your mistakes. What was the reason for getting such bad grades freshman and sophomore year?

Sleeping Disorder, and I did not really believe I was going to college. I’m just really concerned because I want to get into this college, and I have focused on my growth academically during my last two years, tests, and achievements.

It will be super hard, seeing that collegeboard reports that 1% of people accepted to UVA had a gpa under 3.0, 1% 3.0-3.24, and 2% 3.25-3.49

So what was your sophomore GPA?

If you could get your counselor to write about your disorder in their rec, I highly recommend it.

What kind of recommendations would you have for me to raise my chances?

My sophomore year was the most difficult, as I failed two classes. It really effected my GPA.

Did you retake the classes and do well?

My only recommendations are to make sure colleges find out about your reasons for your bad grades and to just try your best first semester next year. I think that private colleges would be more willing to look past your GPA slump than public unis.

I did attend Summer Classes to recieve a S on my report card. I really just want to be near Charlottesville, VA and I want to be involved in Government. Any Good College that has a Public Policy graduate program, and is near Charlottesville

Georgetown. GWU and George Mason are also in/near Washington DC, so I’m sure they get a considerable amount of students into D.C. politics.

Do you think any of those schools would be able to look past my academic setbacks?

I’m not sure.

Georgetown and GWU would be tough. Georgetown is probably more out of reach then UVA. GWU would be a big reach.

However, George Mason has often been cited as a very up and coming university that seems to be providing a very good education. Also maybe Mary Washington University. Look at those.

Thank You Very Much
Your information has been invaluable to me

What about American? They may be worth looking at.

Since your GPA is an upward trend, getting excellent recommendations is critical, as well as having the guidance counselor document possible extenuating circumstances for the lower grades freshman and soph years. Make sure your SAT/ACT scores are as high as can be - prepare, retake if necessary…Next, write a stellar essay with SPECIFIC reasons for your #1 choice, and site specific ways you will enhance the community there with your personal characteristics. Get involved in your projected major of choice through volunteer, community service, intern, etc. Lastly, see if you can arrange to INTERVIEW with the admissions office and restate your case for admissions. 1-2% is still quite a number of people being admitted - If it does not go in your favor, you can always TRANSER after a semester or freshman year. GO FOR IT!!!

Thanks Again-
I have requested information from all of the colleges you all offered. I do have a question as well, who should I recieve letters of recommendation from exactly? My guidance counselor is a must, but who else should I seek?

Yamaha12, seeing as you are very confident and capable in your abilities and if UVA is truly your dream school, there is a way to get in, though it may not be the way you originally planned. You’ve overcome your sleeping disorder, but it’s already left a mark on your high school GPA, nevertheless, I encourage you to apply to several colleges you are interested in anyways. From there, do the best you possibly can your freshmen year. If you’ve accomplished alot, make sure to apply as a transfer student to UVA or another college you love. This will probably be your best option! I hope this has been helpful
