Concerning Dorms/Decision

I have a question about dorms and making your decision to attend UMD CP.
I know that the mark to confirm your enrollment and 'decide' to attend CP is May 1st and I'm sure that the earlier you confirm your enrollment and pay the deposit, the better chance you have at the 'better dorms'. (More comfortable, I guess.)

Now my question is, is it too late to confirm your enrollment and expect a 'good' dorm when you confirm around late April?

I was admitted to UMD CP and would like one of the better dorms by confirming my enrollment there early but I am also waiting on another college decision that I hear back in April. Would it be too late to confirm enrollment by then? I am still unsure where I am going because I have concerns about my financial aid.

Thank you so much. All comments are appreciated.
(Please ask me anything if you have any questions/concerns about my thread.)

I’m in a similar situation…so i hope you get an answer

Apparently everyone is like this…
i also wonder if we get to choose our roomates

well if you’re honors like me, then housing isn’t a problem

I didn’t think about that alex. So if i’m in honors humanities, i’m guaranteed a spot in wicomico??

I asked about this and this is what I got from someone in Undergraduate Admissions. We wanted to confirm housing, but we might not know if she is attending until mid to late April.

“The enrollment confirmation $400. This secures a place in the class. The fee is non-refundable, though, on a case-by-case basis, we can make refunds before May 1”

I wrote them because I was curious about the housing deposit for my D. I did not want to pay the $400 to confirm enrollment, I only wanted to secure housing for her, but I was willing to give them some sort of deposit. I clicked over to ‘confirm housing’ and found that it was free. I called to confirm that I had not tricked the program or something - the person I spoke to said, no, I hadn’t and there was not a charge to confirm housing. I said, are you sure I can’t force some money on you, she said no.

We will confirm enrollment when we are certain she is attending. When I was on the phone with the person I confirmed that she had indeed been confirmed for housing.

basically, and if theres not enough space for you in honors housing, then they’ll find a decent place for one of their top students.

2 years ago, D confirmed at the end of April (maybe the 28th or 29th)? She was in honors, and was put into a (planned) triple in Denton. Her other 2 roommates had also confirmed very late in April. It was very tight spacing…they made the most of it, but it wasn’t something I’d recommend. There were some guys they knew who were in an unplanned triple in Denton (that was a double room that had 3 beds in it)…not good.

This year, as pumpkin indicates, I went through the “confirm housing” screens (without paying the enrollment confirmation of $400) for D#2. We expect the pay the enrollment confirmation by the beginning of April, just in case. She’s in Scholars, so we expect she’ll be in Centreville, but I’d rather avoid a triple, just in case…

Last year, the confirm enrollment and housing confirmation were all in one, with a non-refundable fee of $200. This year’s process sounds like a better deal: being able to confirm housing and get into the housing queue, I’m assuming, without having to pay a fee until you’ve fully decided to commit.

Thank you all for your insights.
@ oregonianmom, You can confirm housing and ‘get your spot’ in a dorm without having to pay the fee? How might I go about doing this? On the website I assume or do I have to call in?
When you confirm housing w/o paying the enrollment fee, do you get to choose where your dorm is or do the admissions people automatically assign these for you?
(As of now, I have no idea what is a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ place to dorm. I should ask my current UMD friends.)

I have checked on the site and have found a place to confirm enrollment and confirm housing.
Here is the link, but you must be logged in. https://www.sis.umd.edu/admissions/AdmitDec</a>
I see my admissions decision and to the left, I see the ‘Confirm Enrollment’ and ‘Confirm Housing’ links (with the addition of a ‘Logout’ link).
If I click the ‘Confirm Housing’ link and click ‘Request Your Housing’, I am brought to a new page and form that I must fill out. If I fill everything out, this does not mean that I am paying the deposit?
Thanks

Forgot to edit, “If I click the ‘Confirm Housing’ link and click ‘Request Your Housing’, I am brought to a new page and form that I must fill out. If I fill everything out, this does not mean that I am paying the deposit?”
If I fill everything out and confirm, this does not mean that I am paying the deposit and confirming my enrollment at UMD CP, correct?
It is only getting me housing, correct?

If it doesn’t ask for a credit card number, you’re not paying anything. (it appears this year you can confirm housing without paying the enrollment deposit). Also, you won’t really have a choice on the dorms. You’ll likely be in one of the high rise dorms where they usually assign freshmen (unless you’re in Honors, Gemstone, Scholars, or Civicus).

I hear Gemstone dorm is pretty bad. If I am a Gemstone, can I choose the Honor one instead? I heard there is one Honor dorm which has air condition…

The a/c honors dorm you are referring to is Anne Arundel; only a few freshmen end up there…you can’t request it (mostly it is sophomore honors). Ellicott (Gemstone) and Denton (Honors) are very similar…older buildings, cinder block walls, etc. It’s no palace, but it’s part of the college experience, or so I told myself when we left D there 2 years ago! The lounges have a/c, which is helpful for the first 2-3 weeks of school. There really is very little choice about dorm assignment for freshmen, and none of the choices are luxurious. It’s your choice to make it comfortable and “like home”!!

^I would just like to point out that Queen Anne’s Hall is another air-conditioned Honors Dorm that a few freshmen end up in.

Sorry if I sound a little paranoid~
So, if you confirm housing, you don’t have to pay the enrollment deposit. You can pay the enrollment deposit later.
Now, if you confirm housing, you are not really committing yourself to UMD CP, correct?
You can can confirm housing, decline it before May 1st, and attend another college?
Thank you so much (:

That’s how I interpret it. However, we’re not planning to wait until the end of April to confirm, just in case…just waiting on the $$ info…

Thank you so much everyone. I got my questions answered with more answers than expected.
Thanks for the additional info as well.

Are Honors students guaranteed housing for the four years they are there? Someone on another thread posted that only freshman have guaranteed housing. Is that correct?

@ Jewels_08, I am not sure really because I wasn’t admitted to the Honors program. I’m sure they are though? (Don’t take my word for it.)
