ok, this is probably a stupid question but i always wondered how colleges match up the rec letters with the application itself. when you ask a teacher to write a rec letter, doesn't he/she just mail it in to the college when finished? And later on, you send in the real application right? is that how you're supposed to do it or do you send the entire application with the rec letters in together (all in the same envelope)?

Your rec letter form will have your name on it. That, plus your HS or city will be enuff to match w/your file. Colleges intake tens of thousands each and every year. For many years. One should think these systems are already in place, no?

If your teacher wants to do it on paper, then yes he/she would just send in the envelope - but don’t worry, the admissions office will just put it in your file and wait for your application. However, teachers can submit letters online through most applications, so ask if they’d like to do that instead. That way, the letter will be submitted when you click submit. Also, I’d advise against you doing a paper application because of the fact that a lot of post offices are closed on the RD due dates - online is the way to go.
