How prevalent is cheating? I know there is an honor code, but cheating exists at every college, and I want to know how it is at duke. In my high school, many students cheat on exams and contests and end up at great colleges, some at duke. I hope they are a very small minority when they get here (at duke). I'd appreciate honest comments on cheating from current students, and other acceptees if they know of cheaters who are enrolling.

i've never cheated . . . the worst cheating i can think of friends committing is asking for an extension based on "the dog ate my homework" type of excuse. Cheating is treated very seriously. I know a kid who got suspended for a semester for not citing things in a paper. There are serious consequences. I don't know about cheating on exams - as a liberal arts major I am used to essay exams where cheating just isn't an issue. Maybe someone else can answer that better.

Great question. Same problem at my school, except most of the cheaters didn't get into great schools like Duke! Since I had to enroll at USC (accepted off waitlist), I was somewhat disturbed to find they had no formal honor code. I'm glad to see Duke takes it really seriously!

I certainly have never cheated, and feel that while cheating probably still exists at Duke, it probably occurs to a lesser degree than at other colleges.

I know a girl who cheated her way through high school and into Duke. Hopefully she'll be caught there, I'm sure she'll keep it up cuz while she's ambitious she doesn't want to do work, which is about the best rationale for cheating.
