Concerns about Provisional Acceptance

Congratulations to all who were accepted! I’m a HS senior with mostly straight As and a couple of Bs. Just got admitted to some great schools including UCI for European Studies as my first choice. My problem is last fall semester I stupidly took a non-required, non A-G statistics class at the local community college, just for enrichment since I had taken all the advanced math classes my high school offered. It was a bad decision. The class was 100% asynchronous with no instructor, just power point slides. In spite of my best efforts, as well as hiring a tutor after the first two flubbed exams, I ended up still only getting D for a final grade. Completely blew up in my face. An unforced error if you will … The rest of my grades are all great and will be all As this semester too, with one possible B in another college course I’m taking. It’s just this one D, which at the Community College is still considered a passing grade. I have called UCI multiple times to try and meet with the admissions people to see if we can talk, let me explain that this was an isolated incident, not senioritis, maybe to see if they will give me a read, any indication about my chances to retain my spot, and they won’t. They say to wait until July 1. The problem is I am not allowed to accept at any other UCs now that I’ve accepted at UCI. The system recognizes that you’ve already accepted elsewhere and it will ask you to rescind UCI before you accept at their institution. I know this is my fault. But I’m super worried about July 1 coming and UCI rescinds and I’m left holding the bag with no options. I have safeties like Cal State LB and Cal State San Marcos but I’m heartsick at the thought of what might happen. I know you all can’t give me an answer but historically speaking, does anyone have ANY IDEA if this one D in a non-A-G class in a non-required course for my major is going to be my downfall? Thank you all. Signed, Super Worried in Escondido :frowning:

Is the course UC transferable which might be the difference? If so, then it can be an issue. If is not transferable, then you should be fine.

Did you check assist.org for transferability?

You received the standard answer from UCI meaning they cannot make a decision until they see your final transcript.

Yes, it was Math 120, Elementary Statistics :frowning:
Not a course I needed but took it for “enrichment” and it backfired. Just honestly not sure if they will rescind because it’s not A-G and not going to be a requirement for my major? What do you think my chances are Gumbymom? UC Davis says to report any D or F for A-G courses only. UCI did not make that distinction.

Elementary Statistics is UC transferable and it falls under Mathematics so it is also an A-G course. I am not UCI admissions so I cannot give you an answer but since the rest of your academic record looks good, hopefully they will give you the benefit of doubt and not rescind your acceptance.

I would try contacting CSU San Marcos or Long Beach to see if they could extend their SIR deadline for you until you get a final answer from UCI?

Thank you Gumbymom. I was under the impression it was not A-G because my high school specifically listed it as not. I will have to circle back with my guidance counselor and find out if their info is wrong because if it is… yikes. My grades are all projected to be excellent again this semester. I used every word of the 150 UCI gives you for the “explanation” and I made sure I didn’t make any excuses and owned my mess. And told UCI I realized what a privilege it is to be admitted and to please consider the totality of my record including my upcoming spring grades and not let this one awful mistake ruin my future with the school. I also assured them it was not senioritis because I was still involved with Academic League and the school play and my other ECs… hopefully I made a good case for myself. Thank you for your kind advice, and for the tip on asking CSUSM and LB about an extension.

Since it is a community college, your HS does have the option of listing or not listing it as an A-G course on your transcript. However, you are required to send the community college transcript along with your HS transcript to UCI. Since statistics falls under the A-G category of Math, it will be considered an A-G course which is also UC/CSU transferable.

Oh gotcha. That all makes sense now. Thank you again for all your invaluable insight. How I wish I didn’t take that class now … ugh.

Why don’t you see if they’ll let you retake the class over the summer?

Honestly that is one of the things I was considering. I know the community college will but will be up to UCI. I am just surprised they are not willing to take a face to face meeting. I would have thought they would be wanting to the opportunity to really “question” students or at least talk to students willing to put themselves in the hot seat. Thank you again for everything!

You could email them with the offer to retake the course and see what they say. Definitely worth a shot.

My son is considering UCI also. He made a small mistake on his application, and is surprised that UCI hasn’t given him a definitive decision, unlike some other UCs.

Best of luck to your son, LJmom. I am really surprised that the answer is not “as soon as we get a final transcript we will make a decision…” If it’s a question of a mistake on his application I can’t imagine they would hold that against him especially since he came out ahead of it and informed them, rather than let them find it and then claim ignorance. Honesty is best!

Thanks, Tartine. He wound up committing to a different UC. I hope that all works out for you at UCI!
