Concordia Language Villages

We already have many threads for other summer programs, so I feel we should have a Concordia Page.

Has anyone on here ever attended their camps?

I thought there already was a CLV thread (or quite a few, actually), but the search function is currently down for me (they were re-indexing yesterday, I think). Anywho, I’ve never gone, although I would like to. Don’t they have that one rule where if you speak English or another language more than three times, they kick you out?

CLV camps get brought up a lot on this forum, but I haven’t seen threads exclusively about them in the past year or so. My kids attended two different camps – one went to French camp for a few years, and the other one spent several years at Finnish camp and was even a high school credit villager for a couple of years (we are not Finns… go figure). CH, they are not so strict. It is immersion camp, but they would not send anyone home for that (maybe you are thinking of Middlebury? I know they used to have some pretty strict rules for their immersion camps).

I do not believe there is a thread dedicated specifically to CLV, if there is, than it must be an old thread.

They are not that strict. English is discouraged, though. If you want to do anything with other campers and counselors, you must speak in the target language, because the counselors will ignore you and a lot of the campers may speak to you in the target language, too.

You’re both right, I was thinking of another program–I think it was something in Canada, though, I’ve never heard of Middlebury before now.

Here is a link for Middlebury (sorry, not trying to hijack the CLV thread :D):

In my experience, this was not the case at all, but maybe it varies depending on the village.

I went only knowing the numbers and colors of the target language, so you can bet I was speaking a whole lot of English (and getting extremely confused). Counselors were happy to have conversations with me, even if I only spoke English.

By the end of my time there I was AMAZED at how much I learned - I very very highly recommend the villages to anyone, no matter his/her level of proficiency in the language.

And campers mostly spoke English amongst themselves - even the really advanced foreign speakers. There were several incentives in place that required you to speak in the language for the day or whatever, and that would be the main reason a camper would refuse to speak English.

Yeah. It really depends on the village. But at Waldsee, most counselors would only talk to you auf Deutsch, if they knew you were capable in the language.
