@SwimmingDad So thrilled McGill is the right fit! My S18 will be applying for Faculty of Arts as well! Did he apply inter faculty with BS &BA? Thank you for the offer! I PMed you!
With enough AP credits it may also be possible to enter as a U1 if desired. Believe at McGill it’s 24 credits total and really does not matter which AP’s they are for. Not sure about Concordia but may be similar. Given the CEGEP student population, the Quebec schools are well set up to accommodate US kids coming in with AP/DE credit.
Here is the AP conversion chart for Concordia.

Just to clarify, the education system in Quebec is quite different than the rest of Canada or most other countries. In Quebec high school is grades 7-11. Though grades 7 & 8 are included in high school in Quebec, the curriculum is equivalent to grade 7 & 8 elsewhere, so really high school in Quebec is only 3 years 9-11. After that they can attend a CEGEP usually for an additional 2 years which is equivalent to grade 12 and Y1 university outside of Quebec. This is why when they start university they are a year a head. For them Y1 university = Y2 in other provinces and their degree programs are 3 years. It basically saves them a year of tuition as the province pays for their first year of university. To solve this problem for students entering from a non-Quebec system, universities in Quebec offer a Y0 program which would be Y1 in any other province/country, making for a 4 year degree.
Looking at the admission requirements for non-Quebec Canadian applicants for the B.Com., the math prerequisite is grade 12 pre-calculus or calculus, so calculus is not required though would most likely be helpful. These courses would be roughly equivalent to US honours level classes. The other required course is English (also honours level).
Requirements for US applicants are less specific in terms of required courses:
"Applicants must be completing grade 12 with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.30 scale) and an average GPA of 3.0 in mathematics courses. Final grade 11 and mid-term grade 12 results are used to calculate admissions averages.
Advanced Placement (AP) courses will only be assessed once the applicant’s file is complete. SAT or ACT scores are not required for admission; admissions is based solely on high school grades. A GED is not accepted in lieu of a high school diploma."
HTH
Also, with regards to AP courses, Concordia will accept 3’s in most subjects. In Ontario generally a minimum of 4 is required and for some courses/programs a 5 is required.
Concordia was awesome! I hope people who are interested got to check them out during their open house.
Can you tell more? What did you see, what did you like, were surprised about (positively and negatively), anything that may be an issue…
I was so pleasantly surprised at how welcoming and kind they were at Concordia considering how big their open house was! Everyone there could not say enough about the wealth management program and John Molson School of Business which is what my son wants to study. The woman in charge of the Kenneth Woods Portfolio Management program, Reena Atanasiadis, spoke to my son and basically told him, “When I am done with you, you will be humble and prepared for a life in finance if that is what you want!” She placed some of the kids chosen for the Kenneth Woods program with Goldman Sachs for internships and the second they get back she sent them to Africa to help teach people how to start businesses and help their communities. I was speechless.
The Admissions people made it perfectly clear that they are there to welcome all students that meet admissions requirements, period. Classes are no more than 45 people per class and that is important to them. They have club after club and want students to be involved in anything and everything that will keep them engaged and make their college experience positive and fulfilling. The buildings were clean and updated and their classrooms (at least the ones we saw) were all updated and modern. They really pride themselves with being “a school with a small school mentality with big school resources.”
Cons- housing. They do not have many dorms although I do have to say the rooms are beautiful. High ceilings, bright, loads of furniture and hard wood floors. It is on a first come and first serve basis after acceptance and housing on campus housing sells out within days. They say they guarantee housing for all students graduating right from high school but I do not see how that is possible. I have found a beautiful apartment that is literally less expensive than the dorm and close to the school but I am in serious doubt that my son can handle living completely on his own without a transitional dorm experience for at least a year. Also weird but not a complete deal breaker (but I know for some students and parents it would be), bathrooms are co-ed. Showers, bathrooms, all it. There are some private rooms with full bathrooms in the room but they are very rare and get snatched up the second housing opens. Also you must buy a meal plan when you get housing and I heard the food choices (really one downtown and I believe 2 on the other campus) are limited. We saw the cafeteria from the outside but did not see it from the inside.
Overall Concordia really impressed us! My son loves it and really wants to go there. We went to the McGill open house and will only say he really, really disliked it.
Please feel free to PM me and I can answer any and all questions!
One more thing, thank you @DadTwoGirls @MYOS1634 for the suggestion of asking about Calculus. He spoke to the head of the finance program and while he would start at U0 he said he would be more than ready for the math courses because of his math background in courses!
Thank you for the detailed report, it’s much appreciated and I’m sure will be very useful to many readers!
Another interesting push for Concordia! Seems like there are a lot of exciting things happening for the school!
Accepted to Concordia (JSMB) with possible deferment of 2 math classes due to his high grades in Calculus. Very exciting option! He is very excited but wants to wait for Bentley’s decision and if they offer him a scholarship. He has been accepted to his 2 safety schools with generous scholarships (which we were not expecting!) but in the end I really think he will end up in Concordia due to the overall experience of living and studying in Montreal. In the end, we know he will end up where he is meant to be so we are thrilled! :-bd
contgrats @LiLiBug !
Concordia just gave my son a scholarship! Pretty excited about that!! :D/
Congratulations!!
I wanted to update this thread in case there is a Junior/Senior parent who a) has questions about Concordia and b) stressed about “what college my kid will get into”.
My son is in his 3rd month at Concordia University in Montreal and is happier than I have ever seen him. He absolutely loves Montreal, (and Canada), has made tons of friends and is seeing the world from a whole new light. He has already done so much including participating in Jewish festivities with a dear friend that he made while there and learning to eat all kinds of cool foods. (Developed a taste for Poutine and Sushi!) His favorite place on campus is the residence hall chapel (he loves the beauty and splendor of it) and his friend group is comprised of more cultures and points of views than he ever even imagined. Classes are going wonderful and most importantly he is… HAPPY.
I guess what I am trying to say is that every child will end up where they are meant to be. I am in tears while I write this because the stress was borderline unbearable last year and I see my friends whose Juniors and Seniors are literally falling apart with anxiety about the college. There is a college for every child and as someone said to me “The name on the building is not as important as the smile on their faces when they land where they are meant to be.”

@LiLiBug So happy to hear about your son! As someone who came to Canada for college many years ago and am still here, I completely understand (now more than ever!) how attractive my beautiful country is to Americans.
S1 is enjoying his 1st year at McGill, though the schoolwork load is starting to kick in as the leaves desert the trees and the Canadien’s season starts to ramp up. We’ll see how bedraggled he is when he visits us at Christmas.
SIL and nephew went Concordia. Brother still lives in MTL. Unique city. Has a good mix of safe, friendly, sophisticated, and interesting. It's a big city, so you can find anything if you look hard enough...except for warmth in January and roads without potholes.
@LiLiBug Not sure if you are still around. My S19 has applied to both McGill and Concordia but definitely seems to want Concordia (marketing at JMSB). We are up in Montreal right now for U.S. Thanksgiving…he attended a class on Thursday and did some exploring and says it is where he wants to be. He’s ended up at a 3.33 and a 31 ACT. Hopefully all will work out. Glad to hear your son loves Concordia. We are looking forward to having two in Montreal!
