Concurrent Enrollment: CC and UC

Is it legal to enroll in community college courses during the summer as a prospective student to a university? In my case, more specifically, I am enrolled to attend classes at UCSB starting on Sept. 15th, 2018 but want to sign up for classes in a community college (that does transfer courses for UCs) the summer before I start attending UCSB (summer, 2018).

As it stands, UCSB has offered me to apply for their costly FSSP (Freshman Summer Start Program) so that I could take summer courses at UCSB. I am hoping that taking community college courses won’t cause any issues in light of this program’s purpose (i.e. Is it still legal to enroll in courses at a different school although the one I plan to attend for the next academic year offers its own?).

As someone who is currently at a CC AND have been admitted to UCSB and will also be starting in the fall.

Yes. It is perfectly fine to take summer courses elsewhere. Even once you’re at UCSB, you can even take classes at CCs while enrolled. The main thing to be aware of is that the only real advantages of this are saving some money (if you aren’t getting really any financial aid) and finding available, open classes that are already full at UCSB. I believe right now CC classes are roughly $48 a unit plus whatever fees the school has. It can be a great, cheap way to get some general ed classes out of the way.

not a problem. see http://www.duels.ucsb.edu/advising/planning/transfer-credit the section “additional considerations”

check on ASSIST to make sure UCSB will give you credit for the classes you take. Not all classes at a CC are eligible
