"Conditional acceptance"?

On my schools college portal, it says two people got in to UChiacgo this year. However, among the senior class we mostly know who applied and everyone was waitlisted/rejected. We asked our guidance counselor about it and he said the two people who got on had “conditional acceptance” and that it wouldn’t effect regular admissions. However, as far as I know Uchicago doesn’t offer conditional acceptance; but I doubt our counselor was directly lying to us. Does anyone have an idea of what he could be referring to? Does Uchicago have any unique early acceptance features or something like that?

The only conditional acceptance I know of and I am guessing is they offer a gap year acceptance for the next year admission. Once you accepted, you have to wait a year to attend. Perhaps that is what they meant.

Best to go back to the source (counselor) and ask him directly, I’m sure he will clarify.

Perhaps the GC will clarify. However, I am not sure that doing so would be appropriate. With so few people applying from one high school, there is not a lot of anonymity in the application process. Perhaps privacy should be respected. I am sure if a fellow student wants to share the details of his/her application, that they would volunteer such information.

I’m pretty sure you can ask what “conditional” means without any personal info revealed.
