confidence

how much confidence is obnoxious?

like, before decisions, can someone reasonably say "I think I'll probably get into Harvard" without sounding like shes bragging?

No. Even if it's true. I don't even tell people I'm considerding Ivies because it sounds so...idk narcissistic? :)

No, there's no way that that can come across as anything else but obnoxious, I think.

No, she cannot. It's obnoxious. And why would she have to say that, if she was so confident?

I agree, glassesarechic. It seems a sign of insecurity to throw that kind of language around.

Well she wasn't saying it for anyone who would listen. The school wasn't exactly Harvard (it was Yale), and the conversation was something like :

person 1: why didn't you apply to Stanford early? It's easier to get in early and I thought your favorite school was Yale
person 2: B/c I can probably get into Yale RD but for Stanford it's harder to get into b/c I am on the east coast

or something like that

I think using the phrase 'probably can get into' for any of the Ivies is tempting the fates.

Well, in that context it's not THAT bad, but nobody will "probably get into Yale RD" unless they cured cancer or is a recruited athlete.

oops:

why DID you apply to Stanford early?

don't tell people you're going to do something until you actually do it. :)

If they are overly confident about Yale, without any real hook or talent, they are either really cocky or simply naive about the difficulty of college admissions.

Unless you are: martian, an olympic athlete, have a 2570 SAT, and have at least 300 community service millenia, I don't think saying "I will probably get into hypms" is a good idea. I mean...what good can come from saying that?

certain people can say it. Some people really do have over a 50% chance of getting into HYPS, and thus have the right to say that they will probably get in.

I agree with you'llsee.... in that there might be some people who can truly say that they will probably get into HYPS. However, I certainly have not met one and I can only assume that there is a very very very small number of people who can claim so. Assuming that your friend is not one of them, I think she's being presumptive.

I am 90% confident that the true value lies between...oh **** not that kind of confidence...

Person 2 could be setting herself up for potential embarrassment if she doesn't get accepted
