Does anyone have this problem? If so, what did you guys do? The financial aid office at the college told me to send in proof of my citizenship, but is it too late to do it now?
Do it ASAP
You cannot send a copy of your Certificate of Citizenship/naturalization or passport. You must either send the original or take the document to the FA office. You need to contact them and arrange this.
On Monday, get yourself and your documents to the closest Social Security Office, and have them fix your records there, then you will be able to update the FAFSA and it will show that you are a citizen.
Call the college and ask what they need. My son was adopted from Korea and I had to send in his proof if Citizenship every year to FA office. I sent a copy of the front page of his passport. I did not have to send the original - his college accepted the copy.
Why would they need a copy of his passport every year? Why was it questioned at all? Usually, once the SSN comes up correctly (as citizen), there should be no question. My daughter wasn’t questioned at all as her status was changed when she was very young.
No idea, but that is what his college needed to verify US citizenship.
