Confirming Housing

Hi,
I got notification of my financial aid package today, and apparently it is based on me living on campus. However, I will not be accepting ANY financial aid (besides my merit scholarship), and I want to live OFF campus (commute). My questions are

1) How do I 'inform' UMD that I will not be living on campus? Do I just not confirm housing when I log into the 'Check your Admission Decision' page when I decide to enroll, or is there something else I have to do?

2) Does this mean I have to re-submit my fafsa, even though I wont be accepting any aid (all I got offered was a loan, which I dont need)

Thanks so much, any help would be truely appreciated :D

You don’t need to resubmit your fafsa…you have to reply to your financial aid offer (and specifically not accept the loans). As far as the housing, I’m not sure…you probably should email or call Reslife to confirm what to do, just to make sure you don’t get overlooked or they may think you forgot and keep bugging you.

Thanks so much for the response, astrophysicsmom! I will call in and ask.

I have another question about housing, and would really appreciate any response.

I was admitted in early February and am leaning towards choosing MD. I will be visiting in two weeks, and will make a final decision then. Should I submit my housing application now? Does submitting it mean I have to go or can I withdraw it if I decide not to go? Because I am worried that, because I am waiting so long to make a decision, it will affect the housing situation I get (i.e. a room with 3/4 people). Any thoughts?

Yes, you should submit the housing application NOW. (I don’t believe you have to commit any $$ to do so). It’s already getting late, but you’ll be better off than if you wait until the end of April). If you do decide not to go to UMD, you should notify Reslife as a courtesy. Certainly you want to try to avoid living in a triple (planned or otherwise), unless it’s with 2 other friends and you really want to request it.

astrophysicsmom, I’m an incoming freshman and I’m so clueless when it comes to my housing situation, can I submit a housing application and inform them of my roommate later on, or do I have to know who I’m rooming with before I submit the application?

If you don’t select a roommate (and the majority of incoming freshmen don’t), one will be selected for you. If you decide to go to UMD and know who you want to live with, you can contact the office of ResLife later and you can both put in a request for each other. Just get your name in for housing to avoid a triple…really.
